Frequently Asked Questions

Most commonly asked IOSH Managing Safely questions:

The standard course requires 22 hours of tuition, normally delivered over three days. Some providers offer a blended version with online elements and shorter classroom sessions.

There are no formal prerequisites. The course is designed for managers and supervisors regardless of previous health and safety experience.

Delegates study hazard identification, risk assessment, control measures, legal responsibilities, incident investigation, performance measurement and environmental protection.

Assessment consists of a 45-question multiple-choice test and a practical risk assessment project completed in the delegate's own workplace.

Successful delegates receive an IOSH Managing Safely certificate issued by the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.

The certificate does not have an expiry date. Many employers request refresher training every three years to keep knowledge up to date.

Managing Safely is aimed at managers and focuses on leadership responsibilities, risk assessment and performance monitoring. Working Safely is a shorter course for non-supervisory staff covering basic hazard awareness.

Delegates should bring a notepad, pen and examples of hazards or incidents from their workplace to use in discussions and the project.

Yes. The risk assessment project is based on the delegate's actual workplace, so the skills are used straight away.

The course is sector-neutral and uses examples that apply to any industry, including construction, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare and offices.

Delegates can normally resit the test or resubmit the project within a set period without repeating the full course.

It provides a consistent method for spotting hazards early, choosing effective controls and demonstrating due diligence to regulators and senior management.

Prices per person typically start at £240. Discounts available for multi person or group bookings (depending upon location)

More Information
